In the UK, psychotherapists and counsellors are not regulated by the government under a statutory scheme. Anybody can apply these professional titles to themselves and practice privately without breaking any laws. However, a number of professional membership organisations exist that are part of the Professional Standards Authority (PSA) Accredited Registers programme. Making sure the therapist you are working with is registered with one of these organisations will give you assurance that they are fully qualified and expected to abide by the organisation’s ethical framework.

You can find out more in the below poster created by the Counsellors Together UK group.

I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). My membership can be verified by looking me up on the BACP Register.
